Federico is the recipient of both a highly prestigious NSERC Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for a doctoral student, as well as an NSERC Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement. More details on Federico’s Vanier Scholarship are available at: (http://communications.uwo.ca/com/western_news/stories/western_doctoral_students_earn_vanier_scholarships_20100513446342/).

The Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplement is a special award that “supports high calibre Canadian graduate students in building global linkages and international networks through the pursuit of exceptional research experiences at research institutions abroad. By accessing international scientific research and training, CGS-MSFSS recipients will contribute to strengthening the potential for collaboration between Canadian universities and affiliated research institutions and universities, or other research institutions outside of Canada.” (from: http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSForeignStudy-BE...)

Federico’s research is in the area of bio-oil and bio-char production, including: feedstock preparation, feeding system optimization, and novel condensation and fractionation techniques for mobile and stationary fast pyrolysis reactors.  For the next 4 months, he will be studying at the Universidad de Zaragoza (UNIZAR), in Zaragoza, Spain, at the Grupo de Procesos Termoquímicos (http://i3a.unizar.es/), under Dr. Jesús Arauzo.  More specifically, Federico will engage in collaborative research on the fast pyrolysis of meat and bone meal by-products using a novel feeding technology that he developed at ICFAR, and is further researching as part of his Ph.D. studies.

Offering students opportunities to enrich their graduate studies experience is an important aim of ICFAR faculty.  Students are encouraged to explore and apply for the many opportunities that exist to enhance their educational experiences, through industrial and/or international placements.  Over the past few months, ICFAR students have been very successful with MITACS Accelerate awards going to Feng Li (generously supported by Syncrude Canada Ltd.) and Martin Huard (with generous support from Agri-Therm Inc.), the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship being awarded to Federico Berruti, and, one of our former graduate students, Ran Xu, being awarded a MITACS Elevate Industrial Postdoctoral Fellowship, with support from Imperial Oil, to continue research at ICFAR.
