ICFAR will host: The Waste-to-Resources Innovation Research and Development Program: Fostering a Circular Economy

ICFAR will host: The Waste-to-Resources Innovation Research and Development Program: Fostering a Circular Economy”, with over 80 people representing industry, academia and government attending.  This event, being held on March 16, 2017 at West Have Golf & Country Club, is being funded through the NSERC Connect program, with additional financial support from the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE).   A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover residual products and waste materials at the end of each service life, add value and re-introduce them into the economic circle. A circular economy aims at zero-waste and maximum efficiencies.  The overall meeting objective include the identification of R&D opportunities in terms of feedstocks, conversion technologies and products that the receptor market could utilize.  Frequently, companies in these three sectors are disconnected from each other.  Some companies will produce waste co-products and they would like to gain value from them, but they do not necessarily know what to do with them.  Some companies may have exciting conversion technologies which could convert something into something else, often without knowing what these “somethings” are.  Some companies may be interested in products that could be derived from renewable and sustainable sources provided that they will meet performance and cost specifications to make them attractive. The general public is looking for green solutions and governments are committed to greenhouse gas reduction.

Through this NSERC Connect Waste-to-Resources Innovation meeting,  we wish to build interesting opportunities for R&D across the entire value chain, matching interesting feedstocks with the appropriate conversion technologies required to produce valuable products, and foster the matching of industry partners and academic investigators with the final objective of developing them into execution of projects which could ultimately lead to commercialization.
