Dr. Franco Berruti receives Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research

The Engineering Prize for Achievement in Researchis presented annually to recognize the outstanding research contributions of a faculty member in Western Engineering. I am pleased to announce that the selection committee has chosen Dr. Franco Berruti, Professor in the Department of Chemical & Biochemical Engineering, and Director, ICFAR, as this year’s recipient.  

Dr. Berruti is an internationally renowned and respected researcher and has dedicated his career towards the discovery of innovative chemical engineering processes and technologies, designed to meet industrial and societal needs. He has applied chemical reactors and fluidized bed technologies for transforming heavy oils, biomass or residue materials into valuable chemicals or environmentally friendly fuels. Dr. Berruti has built a strong team of collaborators who have been successful in integrating academic research with industrial application.

 Dr. Berruti publishes in high-quality research journals. He has received 1220 citations and an h-index of 19. He has 118 papers in refereed journals, 68 refereed papers in conference proceedings, and 4 patents. He has delivered 84 invited lectures and conference presentations, has been on the organizing committee for 15 major international conferences and has been the senior founding editor of Engineering Conferences International Symposium Series as well as the senior founding co-editor of the International Journal of Chemical Reactor Engineering.  In addition, Dr. Berruti has graduated over 30 Ph.D. students and 49 Master’s students and is currently supervising 22 graduate students and 4 Postdoctoral Fellows.  He has also secured a large amount of research funding. He has funding from Agriculture and Agri-food Canada as the lead for the Agricultural Biorefinery Innovation Network (ABIN) which involves industry, government and academic partners from across Canada. He is also the lead for a large ORF with other members of the Institute for Chemicals and Fuels from Alternative Resources (ICFAR).  In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Berruti has received a number of awards, including the 2012 Bantrel Award in Design and Industrial Practice, 2011 Ontario Green Chemistry and Engineering Award and the 2011 CNR Rao Medal and Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award. 

Dr. Berruti has expanded his research and the research of his collaborators, enabling participation in huge government and industry initiatives, such as ABIN, NCE BioFuelNet, CEATI, and Leverhulme Trust. Dr. Berruti is a renowned scholar and world leader in his research field. He is a well-known expert and a very deserving recipient of the Engineering Prize for Achievement in Research.
