The annual meeting of the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada occurred February 3 – 6, 2014 in Montreal.

In addition to presentations on traditional pulp and paper subjects, the conference featured a full day of presentations from the FIBRE networks, of which Lignoworks is a part (more information about FIBRE is available on the FIBRE web site). Lignoworks was well-represented at the symposium. Cedric Briens, Lignoworks Scientific Director, gave an overview of the Network and highlighted some recent accomplishments: improved blends of kraft lignin with polylactic acid, production of dry bio-oils using fractional condensation and stabilization of lignin bio-oils by catalytic oxidation.

Angela Dodd, a Lignoworks graduate student who is also an employee of the Weyerhaeuser company, spoke about her research on using lignin for the production of low-cost carbon fibre and used this as an example of how to construct successful university-industry collaborations.
